THE MAIN HALL, ALSO KNOWN AS THE RECREATION HALL, AND BALLROOM, WAS ALMOST ALWAYS LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF AN ASYLUM, AND THE HALL AT SEVERALLS WAS NO EXCEPTION. SITUATED EXACTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAIN HOSPITAL BUILDINGS, AND CONNECTED BY THE CORRIDOR NETWORK, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASILY ACCESSABLE FROM THE MALE OR FEMALE WARDS. TO THE NORTH OF THE HALL WERE THE MAIN KITCHENS, MAIN STORES AND ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, AND SOUTH OF THE HALL, THE PHARMACY, OPERATING THEATRES AND ASSISTANT MEDICAL OFFICER's HOUSE. THE MAIN HALL WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT TO BE THE "CENTRE-PIECE", THE "JEWEL IN THE CROWN" OF THE ASYLUM, SEEMINGLY WITH NO EXPENSE SPARED! PATIENTS AND STAFF ALIKE WOULD REGULARLY CONGREGATE FOR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS TO DANCE, TO WATCH A FILM, OR TO ENTERTAIN IN SOME SORT OF THEATRICAL EVENT. ALSO KNOWN AS THE RECREATION HALL, AND BALLROOM, THE HALL WAS WIDELY CONSIDERED TO BE THE FINEST DANCE HALL IN EAST ANGLIA, IF NOT THE COUNTRY. DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, MANY AMERICANS ON ARRIVING AT COLCHESTER's RAILWAY STATION, WOULD ASK FOR DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO GET TO THE HOSPITAL's HALL. TRAGICALLY, THE MAIN HALL WAS TARGETED BY ARSONISTS IN 2005, AND WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE CHARRED SHELL WAS THEN DEMOLISHED FOR SAFETY REASONS. THE MAIN HALL MAY NO LONGER EXIST IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD, BUT IT WILL LIVE-ON THROUGH PEOPLE's MEMORIES, AND THROUGH THE PHOTOGRAPHS THAT CAPTURED IT OVER THE YEARS.
