Just four years after Severalls Hospital finally closed, the first Planning Application was made to re-develop the Site.
The year was 2001, and at the time, it looked a viable option to re-use a large proportion of the original Edwardian Buildings.
The main Ward Blocks, laid-out in the "Echelon" design, sweeping like a giant horseshoe, were to be kept, together with
the Assistant Medical Officer's Residence, Myland Court, and Ivy Villa. There was even talk of a local College taking-over the magnificent Main Hall.
The momentum of ideas for conversion were kept alive, fuelled by Reports giving praise and acknowledgement to the old Asylum.
In 2002, SAVE; the Architectural Champions, launched a Campaign to highlight the great potential contained within these old Buildings,
and even produced a book to re-inforce this. Other Reports & Surveys were carried-out: some of which are featured in this area of the website.
Around the same time, the Hospital Grounds were registered in English Heritage's Historic Parks & Gardens of Special Historic Interest as Grade II Listed.
If there ever was a time to preserve the essence of a fine example of an Edwardian Asylum,
whilst creating a practical and balanced space between "old & new", those early years were the best opportunity to do so.
However as these early years faded, and Approval finally granted in 2006, so did the feasibility of retaining the majority of the original Hospital Buildings.
Whilst the hands of time can't be turned back, hopefully lessons can be learned in order to make the most of, and to get the best from the Site.
The fate of the former Severalls Hospital Site rests in the outcome of the 2011 Application.
