WE WERE CONTACTED BY PETER AITKENHEAD, WHO HAS SPENT MANY YEARS GATHERING PHOTOGRAPHS, DOCUMENTS ETC. RELATING TO PSYCHIATRY; INCLUDING PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS. HE HAS KINDLY SENT COPIES OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF SEVERALLS HOSPITAL, ALTHOUGH AS EXPLAINED BELOW IN PETER's E-MAIL, THE PERSON BEHIND THE CAMERA REMAINS SOMEWHAT OF A MYSTERY!
"I should mention though that I didn't actually take the Severalls photographs personally - they came from the Health Authority. No-one seemed to know who took them or whence they came so I had my own copies made and returned the originals.....
.....Yes, you are indeed correct that the photographs are really a priceless historical record. I have a large collection (7,000+ images) of many former asylums in S.E. England. Many of these I took myself, and others were loaned to me by Health Authorities, former members of staff etc. Quite often though the originals owned by the H.A.'s are lost, misplaced or do not survive the various changes in administration and I am left with the only copy".
With Best Wishes,
