IN THE LATE 1990's, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT A NEW LINK ROAD WOULD BE BUILT BEHIND DEFOE CRESCENT, FROM MILL ROAD TO BOXTED ROAD, BY-PASSING NAYLAND ROAD, AND DISSECTING THE SOUTH-WESTERN CORNER OF THE GROUNDS OF SEVERALLS HOSPITAL, JUST TO THE WEST OF THE OLD CRICKET PITCH. ONCE COMPLETED AROUND 2002, THIS NEW ROAD WAS NAMED "NORTHERN APPROACH ROAD", AND BECAME THE A134 (FORMALLY MILE END & NAYLAND ROADS). THEN, IN 2008, PLANS WERE UN-VEILED FOR A NEW LINK ROAD; THE "NORTHERN APPROACHES ROAD" (NAR 3). THIS ROAD WILL PROVIDE DIRECT ACCESS TO AND FROM JUNCTION 28 OF THE A12, WHICH OPENED IN DECEMBER OF 2010. THE PROPOSED ROUTE BEGINS FROM THE "STADIUM WAY" ROUNDABOUT ON AXIAL WAY TO THE SOUTH OF JUNCTION 28. FROM HERE IT TRAVELS SOUTHWARDS, AND FIRSTLY CROSSING TOWER LANE PUBLIC FOOTPATH, AND THEN PASSES TO THE EAST OF THE SITE OF IRIS HOUSE (DEMOLISED IN THE EARLY 1990's), WITH ORCHARD AND IVY VILLAS FURTHER TO THE WEST. THE ONLY BUILDING DIRECTLY IN THE PATH OF THE NEW ROAD WAS FERNHOLME VILLA, WHICH WAS DEMOLISHED IN NOVEMBER, 2011. RUNNING BEHIND ROMULUS AND REMUS CLOSE, THE NEW ROAD WILL PASS ACROSS THE OLD CRICKET PITCH, BEFORE JOINING THE EXISTING NORTHERN APPROACH ROAD (A134), JUST NORTH OF THE CURRENT JUNCTION WITH MILL ROAD. IN PREPARATION, THE ROUTE OF THE NEW LINK ROAD WAS CLEARED AT THE END OF 2011 / BEGINNING OF 2012. THE NEW LINK ROAD FINALLY OPENED IN THE SUMMER OF 2015, AND WAS OFFICIALLY GIVEN THE NAME OF "VIA URBIS ROMANAE".
